Colchester Institute
Colchester Institute is redeveloping their existing Sheepen Road Campus, a scheme which is a mixture of new build and remodelling that will provide the college with state of the art facilities.
The existing 16 buildings will be rationalised into 3 buildings and the new accommodation will be arranged around a new courtyard linked by a glazed street. The project is to be phased over 4 years to allow the college to continue educational delivery on the site with minimal disruption to the students and teaching staff.
The site is bordered by the ‘Hilly Fields’ nature reserve (conservation area) and accommodates a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) protecting Roman remains, therefore phase 1 included an archaeological dig followed by the delivery of accommodation for construction and engineering as well as arts and music. Phase two includes the refurbishment of 5 storeys of teaching accommodation and a sports hall. Phase three includes the construction of the remaining two five storey buildings together with the glazed street. These will complete the courtyard development.
