Nightingale Associates was commissioned as Executive Architect to complete the design of the new build Treehouse National Centre for Autism and Training from Stage D+ onwards. The two storey building is located within a conservation area on a gently sloping green site. The building is set back from the road and into the slope, to minimise its visual impact in the streetscape. Also, a green roof helps to blend the building into its surroundings. Sustainability and energy saving principles include:
- Daylighting is maximised (including rooflights) to reduce the electricity load due to artificial lighting.
- Artificial lighting is controlled by photocells linked to dimmers.
- High performance glazing on south and west facades to allow high areas of glazing for daylight while minimising heat loss and solar gain in summer.
- Light shafts from the roof down to the ground floor provide daylight at the internal end of classrooms. Light shafts are also used for shared work, circulation and hall areas.
