Research Complex, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell Science and Innovation Campus
The Research Complex based in Harwell, will be a leading global centre for science and innovation.
A BREEAM rating of ‘very good’ is being aimed for and from the outset studies have been undertaken on the life-cycle cost-effectiveness of the more expensive measures proposed and it is likely that a number of them will be employed on this project, including;
- Use ground granulated blast furnace slag (product of power station) as a cement replacement, to reduce embodied energy use.
- Use exposed concrete structure and openable windows in the office areas to reduce the amount of air-conditioning required. (Air conditioning will be limited to the laboratory areas only).
- Maximise natural lighting while controlling excessive heat loss and gain through the use of advanced glass technology and sun shading.
- Construct labyrinth ground-coupled ventilation system to reduce heating and cooling loads.
- Install automatic lighting control including presence detection and daylight linking and dimming.
