Dr. Neil Smith

Neil is a Partner at Max Fordham Consulting Engineers. He received a BEng in Aeronautical Engineering from Queen Mary College, University of London in 1987.

He began his career as an aerodynamist in the defence industry, and then worked in the marine industry on hovercraft and high-speed marine vessels, which was the basis for his doctorate. In 1990 Neil was an engineer and pilot on the British Joint Services Hovercraft Expedition to the Source of The Yangtze in Tibet. He has also published a paper in the Journal of Fluid Mechanics on his doctorate research.

Following his doctorate, Neil worked in the automation industry as a production line design consultant (including air and hazardous waste extraction systems) for pharmaceutical and manufacturing companies.

He began work at Max Fordham with the Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen, and the Centre for Biomolecular Sciences Building at Nottingham University. He was lead project engineer for the MAXXI Contemporary Art Gallery in Rome and also the new high-speed train station in Naples, both with Zaha Hadid Architects. Neil was the project engineer for the Lee Valley Indoor Athletics Centre, which has achieved an A-rated DEC certificate, and Locking Castle Community School both with David Morley Architects. He was Partner in Charge for the Larmenier & Sacred Hearts Primary school with Studio E Architects.

Neil is currently working on the redevelopment of the old Fiera in Milan, and a Museum in Reggio Calabria, Italy, both with Zaha Hadid Architects, and St John’s School and Community college in Marlborough with ReFormat Architects.
