Sustainability Conference 07

Department of Health
Sustainability Update

Lorraine Brayford used the conference as a platform to announce that NEAT, the healthcare environmental assessment tool, will become BREEAM for Healthcare, pointing out that the change would see tougher criteria and mark a move from the self assessment of NEAT to an accredited standard.

The update from the DoH also draws attention to the £100 million that has been allocated to the NHS to help support energy saving schemes, with the aim of reducing primary energy use by 15% between the years 2000 and 2010. The downloadable PowerPoint slides detail the deadlines and criteria schemes need to meet in order to be eligible.

The money that has been secured from the treasury is said to represent the march towards a carbon neutral NHS and reflects the extent to which sustainability is a priority in the minds of the public, the Government and the public sector. The presentation ends on a further positive note, with figures suggesting that carbon emissions are showing signs of a reduction after and initial rise.
