Dr. Joel Callow

After graduating from the University of Birmingham with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science, Joel went on to study 'Daylight and solar energy in buildings' as a PhD at the School of the Built Environment at the University of Nottingham.

The PhD research had a strong industrial collaboration element and involved the development of several novel daylight transmitting systems for buildings. At the end of the PhD Joel joined Monodraught Ltd as their Director of Research and Development, spearheading efforts to establish recognised performance standards for daylight transmission systems, as well as developing new off-grid solar products for the company.

During 2004 Joel joined Gifford to lead their Building Sciences team from the Oxford office. The team work alongside building engineers and architects, to deliver functional, effective and sustainable buildings. The team combine expertise in building physics with renewable energy system design and broader issues of sustainability, as well as an enthusiasm for good architecture. During 2005, Joel's contribution to the company was recognised by the awarding of the 'Young Achiever of the Year' from the Building Services Journal at their annual awards ceremony.

Joel's current role of Associate with the company involves the management of the national Building Sciences team as well as a substantial amount of knowledge dissemination both within the company and externally. Joel is also responsible for championing excellence in several specialist areas, including Building Regulations, daylighting and low-carbon housing.
