Sustainability Conference 07

Introduction

Nightingale Associates recently held its first conference on sustainability, attracting over 150 delegates including many members of staff and many key figures from across the building industry.

Professor Thomas Downing, director at the Stockholm Environment Institute began the days presentations, talking about the move from accepting the evidence for climate change towards taking action based on that evidence.

The conference also included presentations by speakers such as Professor David Strong, the managing director of BRE who called for a radical rethink in building design and construction, as well as giving a talk on the impact of the new energy performance certificates.

Two speakers from Arup – director Phil Nedin and associate director Dr Neil Kirkpatrick – gave presentations. Mr Nedin advised on sustainable approaches to the design of healthcare facilities while Dr Kirkpatrick talked the audience through Arup’s designs for Dongtan Eco City, a development intended to provide a modern city with exemplary sustainability standards.

Other speakers included Dr Joel Callow of Gifford, talking about Gifford Mind Maps, a tool for helping implement sustainable solutions at a design stage, Patrick Bellew of Atelier Ten presenting on the need to take lessons from nature to develop sustainable architecture and Anthony Wilson, director of Faber Maunsell guiding the audience through the new Part L building regulations.

The event concluded with Lorraine Brayford and Chris Holme giving a brief Department of Health update on sustainability actions.
