Upton Hall School, Wirral
Opened by Princess Anne, Upton Hall School in the Wirral is an ongoing project which has seen the masterplanning and expansion of the school to address changes in curriculum and requirements of modern educational facilities.
The completion of the Lingdale Building was the first step in the execution of the masterplan, and gave the school a new science and technology facility. Challenges included the limitations on development on the site areas, which were overcome by a two storey design curved in plan, as well as a series of pavilion blocks interlined by wedges. Reflecting the school’s commitment to quality the building has copper roofing, extensive ashlar stonework and high quality curtain walling systems. The building is equally striking on the inside, with timber clad ceiling panels, cantilevered glass balustrading and high quality fittings in the science department.
The final major phase of the plan is an extension linking the existing Georgian block and the historic Victorian block, completing links at all levels of the building. It provides extensive academic facilities for the school, including additional design technology, drama and ICT. The extension has been designed as a contemporary addition to the architecture of the existing site, designed to blend with the materials, proportion and scale of the existing historic buildings.
Upton Hall School achieved Best Building Design at the Merseyside Civic Society Awards 2000.
