The Liverpool Blue Coat School

This historic Grade II-listed school in Wavertree, Liverpool required redressing to provide modern facilities which could aid the academic achievements of the school.

Extensive consultation involving numerous partners led to new accommodation in a contemporary style reflecting the positive aspects of the existing school. The extension provides a new formal school entrance contained within an architectural addition to the historic frontage, along with new sports accommodation, catering accommodation, science department, design technology department and music facilities.

The accommodation is clad in prepatinated copper and untreated western red cedar, reflecting the attributes of the existing historic facades with issues of proportion, rhythm and scale addressed in the elevational treatment. The interface between the new and the existing parts of the school have been treated as simple glass linkage, providing transparency in the intersections and leaving clear views of the existing facades through the new additions.
