Sports Soccer, Liverpool City Centre
The site was a vacant plot used for car parking, situated in the centre of the city, approximately 3/4 of a mile from Albert Dock, with adjacent retail and commercial premises.
The site presented particularly difficult design problems because the Underground Mersey Rail System is located underneath the perimeter of the site. Atmore Developments Ltd commissioned us to design a flagship retail store to suit a specific brief for Sports Soccer, a company specialising in sportswear.
The area consists of 950sq.m. for the store, plus 170sq.m. of storage and staff accommodation. The signage to the main facade, bearing the logo of the retailer, is cantilevered on four tubular CHS which penetrates the glazing in silhouette form, thus giving a visual floating feeling to the composition. This also maximises a substantial area of glazing for 'window shopping' below the curved pre-patinated copper fascia.
Interior features include a glazed and scenic lift with two feature steel staircases to first and second floors. Large trapezoidal shaped wells and balconies penetrate the first and second floors which ore visible from the main shopping street, providing an enticing frontage to the public.
The distinctive visual expression, achieved by the use of glazing and the distinctive pre-patinated copper cladding, significantly contributes to the architectural streetscape of Liverpool.
