Brunswick Court, Birkenhead

The project was commissioned by Maritime Housing Association and at the time represented a break away from the standard Housing Association project.

The site falls within the Conservation Area centred around the famous Hamilton Square and which formed the basis for the Hamilton Quarter designation, identified for major building and grant funding in the 1990s. Up to that time there had been a steady decline in the number of people living in the area and part of the Hamilton Quarter brief was to reverse this trend. This project represented the first step towards this goal.

Located behind Hamilton Square, the development is a mixture of Housing for Rent, a series of Loft Style Apartments to be in Shared Ownership and a small number of commercial properties for letting.

The Housing is set in a Town Mews style grouped around two squares protected from the main traffic routes out of Birkenhead by the four storey apartment development fronting the site.

The apartment accommodation has a potential dual purpose in that the ground floor accommodation was intended as potential location for starter business units with accommodation over on the upper two floors. Alternatively these units could as easily be adapted for residential use , which as with the upper floors, have a Mezzanine bedroom overlooking a double height living space.
