Nightingale Associates shortlisted
for design award in Wales

02 May 2009

It has been a good week for Nightingale Associates' Renal & Cardiac Unit in Carmarthen. The £4m unit, part of West Wales General Hospital, has not only been shortlisted for a RIBA design award, but it will also be receiving a certificate from the Carmarthen Civic Society, which has identified it as 'an enhancement to the local environment'.

Completed in December 2007, the 1,300sqm state-of-the-art unit contains 26 dialysis stations and four isolation suites, as well as a cardiac rehabilitation department, a rehab gym, testing suites and staff administration. Built on two floors, the building’s unusual shape was informed by the challenging proportions of the available site. Its curved façade, balcony and ‘stepped’ section were later incorporated into the scheme, providing the building with an open terrace facing the adjacent ward block.

Nightingale Associates is one of six shortlisted entries for the Welsh category of the 2009 RIBA Awards, which also includes buildings designed by David Archer Architects and Capita Architecture.

“We are delighted to hear that our project has been shortlisted for this prestigious award. It’s a significant step not only for this office but also for healthcare projects in general, which typically have struggled to compete with other building types in such awards. We’re also proud to have been nominated amongst a shortlist of such high calibre schemes – fingers crossed!”

The RIBA Awards have been running annually since 1966 and were established to recognise 'buildings that have made a substantial contribution to the local environment’. Entries are judged on a regional level.

RIBA judges will be visiting each of the shortlisted buildings throughout April and the results are expected to be announced at a national ceremony on 21st May 2009.

Nightingale Associates' Cardiff studio will also receive its certificate from the Civic Society at a ceremony on 13th May. The Certificates will be presented by the Society's Chairman, Quentin Macgarvie.
