Richard Harrington, Executive Chairman, Nightingale Associates

The annual BBH Awards recognise excellence, innovation and professionalism in the healthcare built environment, looking specifically at building design, the patient environment, people, products and estates and facilities management. The awards have been running for ten years. Nightingale Associates have the following short-listed entries:

Best Interior Design –
Mental Health Unit, Birmingham New Hospitals Project

Spread across three buildings, the scheme is a key part of the £521m Birmingham New Hospitals PFI project. Five buildings house 201 patients in a safe, remedial environment, offering modern facilities with a campus feel. Natural light, colour, texture and external views were incorporated into the design to enhance therapeucity.

Best Interior Design –
The Norbury Ward in St. George’s Hospital, Stafford

The Norbury ward underwent a radical transformation to provide a soothing, therapeutic environment for in-patients, with features including coloured lighting, specially designed furnishings and four different activity zones, creating a high-quality comfortable atmosphere.

Best Interior Products –
Kings Fund, Enhancing the Healing Environment

Bespoke chair for mental health use – The chair, designed for use in mental health wards, is leather upholstered with a weighted base, intended to be difficult for patients to lift, after staff complained of in-patients throwing and damaging chairs.

Best Project Team –
Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS
Foundation Trust - Essex Cardiothoracic Centre

With spectacular views over the Thames Estuary, the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre includes operating theatres, catheter laboratories, critical care and surgical wards. The design allows natural daylight to flow to virtually all room, including the operating suites.

The Awards received a record 141 entries this year in total.

Georgia Burt, whose projects on the Norbury Ward interior and on the Mental Health Chair are up for two awards, is a Senior Designer at Nightingale Associates.

“Staff and patients at the Norbury Ward were consulted extensively in order to determine what their needs were, and to establish how the old design and furniture contributed towards negativity and discontent.

“The ward was then re-designed to create a therapeutic environment, which could be enjoyed by both staff and patients. Enhancing mental well-being in day-to-day life of in-patients was centre to the new design.

“I am also delighted that two of Nightingale Associates’ mental health projects have been shortlisted in the Best Interior Design category. Not only is this great recognition for the work that Nightingale Associates do, but also for the mental health sector on a whole.”
