Leading public sector architect practice, Nightingale Associates, and construction firm Carillion, are to take on the £25 million refurbishment of Penwith College in Penzance.
Nightingale Associates, specialists in the health, education and science sectors, and Carillion, also recently completed the new Fal and Lynher buildings for Truro College.
The redevelopment project will feature several new state of the art buildings that will accommodate a range of additional teaching and student facilities. The major project will also include extensive new sports facilities and student welfare services for Penwith College, which was recently bought by Truro College.
Nightingale Associates’ commitment to incorporating envrionmental sustainability into its designs will see the redevelopment containing a number of environmentally friendly initiatives, including a wind turbine that will generate a significant amount of the College’s power and a revolutionary, energy efficient boiler system.
The redevelopment project forms part of the College’s commitment to providing top quality education and a broad range of student facilities, and to increase the overall capacity and educational opportunities in Cornwall.
“We are delighted to be working with Truro College and Carillion [contractors] on what will be a very exciting project. The design and environmental sustainability of this project is crucial to ensuring the College is regarded as a top quality establishment, providing some of the best educational opportunities and facilities in the South West, whilst also reflecting the diversity and context of the surrounding landscape.”
Andrew Heason, Regional Director of Nightingale Associates
The project is due to be completed in October 2010, with construction beginning in September this year.
