A Green Apple for the Viking Day Unit

11 June 2008

The Viking Day Unit designed by our Brighton office picked up a South Region Bronze Award at the International Green Apple Awards 2008 last week.

The ceremony took place at the Tower of London, where Nightingale Director Richard Ager accepted the award from Professor David Bellamy.

The International Green Apple Awards were launched in 2000 to celebrate positive contributions to the environment, our built surroundings and the preservation of the country’s architectural heritage.

The Viking Day Unit, which was also short listed for an RIBA Regional Award earlier this year, was praised for its energy efficient design.

“It’s very gratifying for us to receive an International Green Apple Award, because there was such a tremendous effort made by all involved to create a truly sustainable healthcare building.”

Set in a prominent position at QEQM Hospital in Margate, Kent, the cancer care unit features a secluded patients’ courtyard, a green roof, and extensive use of untreated larch timber and zinc cladding. The judges were impressed by the amount of natural light and ventilation achieved and its choice of eco-friendly materials.
