Frog Lane Health Centre
opened by MP Andy Burnham

Health Minister Andy Burnham opened the unique Frog Lane Health Centre in Wigan on the 18th May.

Designed by Nightingale Associates, the three storey Frog Lane Health Centre is home to the first satellite dialysis department in the UK to be built away from an acute site. This allows local patients to receive dialysis close to their homes rather than travelling to an acute hospital. The site is also home to a relocated GP practice, a community health department, a physiotherapy department, a mental health suite and a chronic disease management centre. The new building, part of the Wigan LIFT initiative, has been built on the site of ex-council works department land.

Opening the building, Mr Burnham described it as a fantastic new facility and a “fantastic indication of what the modern NHS can provide,” commenting that “days like this make us feel proud” and that “The PCT takes fantastic pride in improving healthcare provision through LIFT initiative schemes.”

Nightingale Associates architect Neil Speakman said, “This health centre represents a continuing investment in the well-being of people in Wigan, and having patients able to receive dialysis without having to travel great distances is a real step forward in terms of the comfort and care they can receive.”

The contractor on the project was Eric Wright Construction. Nightingale Associates and Eric Wright Construction also collaborated on the Platt Bridge Health Centre, Wigan, recently opened by Tony Blair.
