Croydon Vocational Tower
gets green light

16 February 2007

Nightingale Associates has secured planning permission for a 29 storey mixed use development tower in central Croydon for Croydon College.

The proposed tower will be on the eastern end of the Colleges existing 1950’s Fairfield Building. The £49 million development will accommodate a vocational centre for 14-19 year olds on the first ten floors and 175 flats spread over the upper 18 floors. The college and residential floors will be divided by a shared fitness facility that covers the entire tenth floor

The Tower is linked into the existing college building by a four storey high glazed atrium that contains a student exhibition space, bistro, student information centre and two pedestrian link bridges tying the new college facility into the existing.

The external plaza integrates into the local community by forming a pedestrian arcade linking the nearby East Croydon station to the civic and commercial centres of the town.

The 18 residential floors will be a mix of 175 one and two bed flats with penthouses spread over the top four floors. At the northern and southern ends of the residential floor will be luxury apartments that incorporate winter gardens that provide stunning views over the city and South Downs. The project will be funded by the LSC and from the capital released from the sale of site.
