Groundbreaking Mental Health Unit
wins award

13 June 2007

The Nightingale Associates designed East London Personality Disorder Unit has been awarded the Gold Green Apple Award for enhancing our built environment and architectural heritage.

A 20 bedroom personality disorder unit, the East London PDU applies cutting edge principles to the design of mental health facilities to create an effective, stylish and environmentally sound building that is lighting the way for similar developments. Sustainability elements were incorporated through the use of windcatchers to provide natural ventilation to the ward amenity areas.

The scheme's materials were carefully chosen to provide a contemporary and optimistic feel to the development. This use of sense sensitive design to aid the healing process is part of what positions the PDU at the forefront of mental health design, and is among the elements that led to it being recognised by the Green Organisation for its contribution to our architectural heritage.

The Green Organisation is an independent, non-political, non-activist, non-profit environment group dedicated to recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.
