Peterborough Hospital
reaches Financial Close
04 July 2007
Financial close has been reached on one of the largest NHS projects ever undertaken, the £335 million Peterborough Hospitals PFI.
The development, comprising a new 612 bed Acute Hospital, and a 102 bed Mental health unit, on the Edith Cavell Hospital site, and an Integrated Care Centre on the present Peterborough District Hospital site, will significantly improve healthcare for more than 200,000 people.
Nightingale Associates, working for Multiplex Constructions, are the architects and Lead designers for all three of the buildings that will make up the Peterborough Hospitals PFI. The SPV is Progress Health, a consortium made up of Macquarie Bank (70%) and Mulitplex UK (30%), developing the project alongside the Greater Peterborough Health Investment Plan (GPHIP), the local strategy for the modernisation of health services and the implementation of the NHS plan in Peterborough.
This significant milestone cements the future of a project that ranks among the biggest PFI's in the country, and will see the landmark project starting on site later in the year.
The acute development includes an emergency care centre, general and specialist outpatient services, day surgery, elective and emergency surgery, diagnostics, cancer and therapy services as well as a women and children’s hospital, and a multi-disciplinary education and training centre.
“We're extremely pleased to have reached this stage in helping deliver such a prestigious project. It is excellent news for Nightingale Associates, providing the stability we need for a practice of our size, and it's excellent news for the people in Peterborough who will benefit from improved healthcare as these exceptional facilities move closer to realisation.”
Richard Harrington, Managing Director, Nightingale Associates
The new mental health unit will provide a 102 beds across an adult acute unit, older adults unit, psychiatric intensive care unit and learning disabilities garden areas
The new integrated care centre, to be built on the site of Fenland Wing at Peterborough District Hospital, will include 34 beds, a diagnostic and treatment centre providing outpatients and diagnostic services, and a children's care centre.
The strategy taken by Nightingale Associates and Multiplex marked a radical departure from the public sector comparator in that an entirely new build solution is proposed with the acute hospital at the southern end of the site and the mental health hospital at the Northern end. When these are completed the existing hospital will be demolished and replaced by a landscaped green space.
