Singleton Day Surgery Unit
receives commendation
01 December 2006
Nightingale Associates received a commendation at the Lord Mayor Design Awards in Swansea, recognising the exceptional work on the Singleton Day Surgery Unit.
The award recognised the use of the construction method –volumetric offsite manufacture– combined with sleek, European style. Traditionally the volumetric offsite method has the stigma of being for temporary buildings, although it was used here for the purposes of speed, with the unit taking just five days to be assembled on site. With the Day Surgery Unit having a sixty year lifespan, the challenge was to make it clear that the building was permanent. To this end the team used a dark grey cladding combined with a pavilion style design to create a striking, minimalist building.
Following the award presentation, the team were approached by a developer bidding for a scheme that is part of the Llanelli Waterside Redevelopment; the Grade 2 listed Pumphouse. The developer had been impressed by the project images and is looking to turn the Pumphouse into a restaurant/ leisure facility.
