Nightingale is top midlands architect

15 April 2002

Oxon-based architect Nightingale Associates is the largest in the Midlands region according to a major survey of top architectural practices.

The practice has strengthened its position at the top of the table, ranked number one both in terms of architectural fee income and also in the number of qualified architects employed.

This is the second year running that Nightingale Associates has secured the number one spot. The practice, which also has offices in London and Brighton, has moved up five UK places to stand at number 17 in the nationwide league table. It is also ranked 14th in relation to its estimated growth in UK architectural fee income and one of the fastest risers (16th) in terms of total fee income for 2000-2001.

“Once again this is a notable achievement for a practice which specialises chiefly in healthcare architecture. We have secured a number of large PFI hospital commissions over the past two years and this has contributed to our steady growth. Our staff numbers increased by 16 per cent in 2001 and our success is largely due to their energy, professionalism and creativity.”

During the last 12 months, Nightingale Associates has commenced design work on four buildings for a £30 million medical school in the South West; signed a contract for a £50m redesign of West Middlesex Hospital, the first of the second wave of PFI building contracts which will be seen as a blueprint for all new major hospital schemes. The firm is the winning architect for the £300m Coventry New Hospital, the largest Private Finance hospital so far. It was also the first to be appointed on the first health PFI to be signed, the £100 million Darent Valley Hospital , completed in August 2000.

The Top 100 survey is conducted annually by The Architects Journal.
