Nightingale are the winning architects on the £300m Coventry New Hospitals project.

The practice is part of the Skanska Innisfree Consortium which was formally named preferred bidder on November 9 2001 by the client, University Hospitals, Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, Coventry healthcare NHS Trust and the University of Warwick.

The 1200-bed teaching hospital comprises an acute hospital, clinical sciences building and a new 130-bed mental health facility. The new hospital will replace the existing Walsgrave Hospital plus the majority of Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital, and will be built on the current Walsgrave Hospital site.

Financial close is due on March 28 2002 , with a start on site almost immediately and final completion of the entire project in 2006. First to be completed is the clinical sciences building which must be ready by October 2003, ready for the first intake of students to comply with the government's commitment on training new medical staff.

The announcement marks the end of 15 months' preliminary work on the project, involving up to 20 staff at Nightingale Associates. Staffing levels will now increase still further on this major project, which is being managed by partner Richard Harrington, from the practice's Harwell office. Associates Ginny Cook and John Temple, team leader Michael Simpson and architect Isabella Tallo are key members of the Harwell team.
