Dramatic entrance for
Royal Berkshire Hospital
09 September 2001
Colour and strong design are the hallmark of Royal Berkshire Hospital 's new main entrance which was formally opened in September and is a landmark building in the £100m redevelopment of hospital services in the Reading area.
Designed by Nightingale Associates, the four-storey block has a large atrium and galleried reception area with a specially commissioned dramatic spiral light sculpture.
“This is a huge step forward for us towards our hospital for the 21st century - a new hospital designed around the needs of our patients.
“The architects wanted to create a coherent and memorable space for the enjoyment of patients, staff and visitors and I think they have achieved the brief brilliantly. People like it very much.”
Colin Maclean OBE, Chairman, Royal Berkshire and Battle Hospitals NHS Trust
Visitors to the hospital will now be greeted by receptionists and welcomers, assisted by bright new signage. Blues dominate the main entrance, the dark blue flooring is inset with yellows and oranges, the shapes and patterns designed to help people find their way and recognise which level they are on.
Nightingale Associates have been continuously involved with the redevelopment of Royal Berkshire Hospital since1993 and are currently working on completion of the centre site, due in 2002, followed by the development of the north wing, after which all remaining services will transfer from Battle Hospital.
“Our aim has been to provide state of the art medical planning solutions in exciting new and remodelled buildings. This has been particularly difficult to achieve as not only was the site quite constricted but the hospital had to remain fully functional during the building work.”
