King's topped out

05 April 2001

A topping out ceremony at King's College Hospital marks a key stage in the construction of this major new £76m development for King's College Hospital NHS Trust, designed by Nightingale Associates.

Michael Doherty, Chairman of King's, and John Armitt, Chief Executive of the Costain Group, put the finishing touches on Wednesday March 21 to the concrete roof which completes the main structural work on Bessemer Wing. The major part of a two-phase development, Bessemer Wing will provide a large ambulatory care centre, new women's centre and medical wards, all within a tight urban site. The project is due for completion in October 2002.

“Staff have been very impressed by the speed at which the new building has gone up." The topping out took place just one year after the handover of the site.”

The development, carried out under the government's private finance initiative, is being run by Hospital Partnership Consortium. In a joint venture, Costain and Skanska are carrying out the construction.

A dramatic design solution evolved by Nightingale Associates, incorporates a central atrium serving six levels, with scope for future change and sustainability a major factor.
