01 June 2001
Nightingale Associates have been commissioned as lead consultants and architects on the latest new medical school to form part of the government's drive to expand the number of doctors in the NHS.
The Peninsula Medical School will provide three new buildings for three different Hospital Trusts in the West Country: Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust in Truro ; Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust in Plymouth ; and Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Trust in Exeter . These new schools will accommodate students who have completed their first two years of academic study at Exeter and Plymouth Universities and who are progressing on to the third and fourth years of their clinical studies.
In addition, Nightingale Associates will also be designing a new headquarters building for Peninsula Medical School, under the direction of the Dean, Professor John Tooke and located in Plymouth.
The practice's first task is to complete a development control plan for each of the three hospitals involved, within three months. The completed buildings are expected to be ready for student occupation in Spring 2004.
The other consultants appointed as part of the design team are: mechanical and electrical contractors, Hoare Lea; structural engineers and drainage, Hydar Consulting; quantity surveyors, Gardiner Theobald and Ward Williams.
