Designers adjust colour
controls on hospital interiors
13 September 2000
Interior designers with architects Nightingale Associates have been helping to change the institutional face of hospitals by introducing new approaches to colour and texture.
In a pioneering initiative, Nightingale Interiors have been working with manufacturers such as leading flooring suppliers Polyflor, Nairn and Interface, to evolve new ranges and colourways, specifically with the needs of health service clients in mind. Designers Georgia Burt and Sally Sullivan, from Nightingale Associates' Oxford office, have been holding seminars specially for suppliers, to communicate the special requirements of health service design and explore new ways of breaking out of the traditional mould.
Results are already starting to be seen in several projects, for example at the recently completed Darent Valley Hospital and at King's College Hospital, currently on the drawing board.
“Research is beginning to point strongly to the importance of patients' surroundings in recovery. As one of the country's leading healthcare architects we are able to influence and develop creative solutions with manufacturers, achieving high quality results at relatively low cost.”
