Muckamore Abbey Hospital, Belfast

A 35 bed Admissions and Assessment Unit at Muckamore Abbey Hospital that represents the first part of a five-phase development planned for this rural hospital for people with learning disabilities.

The unit is geared towards assessing the needs of male juveniles and housing them in an environment that will address these needs and provide a secure environment for learning life skills and other educational needs.

The elevational materials chosen were carefully selected to provide empathy between the old and new buildings on the site, alleviating the existing institutional image of Muckamore Abbey Hospital. Roofs of zinc and slates incorporate roof glazing to allow light, ventilation and delight to the corridors of the wards. Random rubble walls help to root the buildings in the landscape and form an important element of the building, together with brick and render.

This project was designed in association with Northern Irish architect Robinson McIlwaine.
