John Henry Court, Princess Elizabeth Hospital, Guernsey

John Henry Court is an early phase in the much larger redevelopment of the Princess Elizabeth Hospital site in Guernsey.

Its completion has enabled the demolition of the existing Hospital staff residences releasing the site for a £25 million clinical block. Other phases include new car parking facilities, a mental health unit, a social centre and a day centre.

The completed building provides accommodation for existing hospital staff and attempts to encourage much needed nursing staff to Guernsey. There are 66 units of accommodation comprising two unit types and also includes communal lounges and laundry facilities.

The building addresses the issues facing construction on the island, together with programming constraints, by utilising offsite manufacture and building systems. The building's structure is composed of a pre-cast concrete crosswall system while the walls are finished to a class C standard alleviating the need to decorate and maintain the finishes whilst adding to the composition of the spaces. Concrete walls were manufactured on the mainland, shipped to Guernsey and craned into position. The interior spaces are further characterized by a bespoke, modular furniture. Again, these were shipped in flat pack form and installed on site. The buildings envelope utilizes a rainscreen system with the cladding material varying between terracotta and a timber veneered high pressure laminate. The resulting building provides the hospital with a low maintenance building finished in high quality products and the resident staff with light, contemporary accommodation.
