Golden Jubilee Wing PFI,
King's College Hospital, London

The new 'Golden Jubilee Wing' of the world famous teaching hospital boasts a large ambulatory care centre, complete new women's centre and new medical wards, all designed to fit within a tight urban site.

The brief for this major development placed an emphasis on aesthetic appeal and architectural quality alongside the need for sustainability and future flexibility. The result is a striking, innovative building that remains sensitive to its Victorian context.

The dominant feature of the new building is a convex, wholly glazed main facade together with a dramatic central atrium, incorporating an art and display area. All departments are arranged around this atrium space. Stairs, lifts and main service risers are all at the centre creating high density facilities with creating effective links to the surrounding hospital buildings.

At the 2004 Public Private Finance Awards, the scheme was named Best Designed Operational Project (all sectors). The project also received a Civic Trust Award in 2004. The GJW was profiled in Hospital Development Magazine in January 2003.
