East London Personality Disorder Unit
The East London Personality Disorder Unit is a pilot scheme carried out under the Government’s Procure 21 procurement strategy, and is one of the first of its kind in the UK. The consortium is lead by Integrated Health Projects (IHP), with Nightingale Associates as lead design architects, working together with the East London and the City Mental Health NHS Trust.
The new 20 bed Personality Disorder Unit is located in Hackney, East London. The building will provide enhanced medium secure accommodation for the local community, at the existing mental healthcare hospital campus adjacent to the John Howard Centre.
The design proposals were developed to provide a safe, secure and therapeutic environment for patients, staff and visitors. The two 10 bed wards provide single bedrooms, including en-suite shower rooms, for all patients with associated amenity areas. This is supported by a range of therapeutic, recreational and educational facilities, both within the unit and across the John Howard Centre campus. The single sex unit is designed to be therapeutically intact with patient privacy and dignity foremost within the design philosophy.
In June 2007, this scheme was awarded the Gold Green Apple Award for enhancing our built environment and architectural heritage.
