Chalkhill Children and Adolescents Mental Health Unit, Haywards Heath
The 18-bed Chalkhill Children and Adolescents Mental Health Unit (CAMHS) at Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath is a development that aims to make a difference to some of the most vulnerable children and adolescents with a range of mental health conditions.
These young people require a modern, safe and child-friendly environment that enables staff to engage with and relate to their patients and help change children’s lives for the better.
The remarkable use of art integrated into the buildings fabric and interior design scheme helps to ensure that the building is welcoming and child-orientated with an emphasis upon de-stigmatising the mental health environment and supporting the users. Bespoke carpet designed to evoke a woodland walk and wallpaper of woodland and seascape scenes all designed by local artists was used in key areas of the building. The natural themes and colours connect the interior and exterior of the building. Externally, subtly coloured concrete printed with leaves and other natural forms blurs the edges of the soft and hard-landscape.
The result is a stunning building that challenges the preconceptions of traditional hospital provision.
