major mental health development

Healthcare commissions

National Centre for Mental Health, Birmingham

The National Mental Health Services, Birmingham resides in three new buildings on two sites. The £65 million Barberry, Oleaster and Zinnia buildings cater for the most specialist aspects of mental health, including neuropsychiatry, eating disorders, those triggered by motherhood and those alongside deafness.

Brightly coloured and drenched in natural light, the facilities are designed to create an environment which is therapeutic for the service users.  Enhanced views of the exterior landscaping reduce the feeling of enclosure, whereas social areas allow for security and discretion. The development promotes inclusion through a space which is comfortable, warm and uplifting.

The design was carefully developed against the Birmingham and Solihull National Mental Health Trust’s new model of care based on modern healthcare standards.  The Trust has praised the scheme on its successful blend of privacy and dignity for patients and flexibility and effectiveness for staff.
